Choosing between Zealandia and Kapiti Island depends on how much time you have and the type of experience you want. Zealandia provides a convenient look at native wildlife close to the city center. Kapiti Island demands a full-day commitment, capped visitor numbers, and a boat ride off the west coast.

What is the main difference?

Zealandia is on the mainland and fenced, while Kapiti is a 1,965-hectare offshore island.

Kapiti sits 5 km off the lower North Island coast. It has been completely predator-free since 1998. Access involves a 15-minute ferry ride from Paraparaumu Beach.

How does access compare?

Zealandia is quick to reach from Wellington, whereas Kapiti Island requires a pre-booked DOC permit.

Kapiti Island tightly controls access to minimize environmental impact. Only about 160 visitors can land each day. Authorized ferry operators bundle the required Department of Conservation (DOC) permit with your ferry ticket.

Which sanctuary feels more wild?

Kapiti Island provides a truly remote, wild environment.

You explore a regenerating ancient forest surrounded by the Kapiti Marine Reserve. You must pack your own drinking water and remove all rubbish. Food must be sealed in rodent-proof containers.

Can I see kiwi at both locations?

Kiwi are nocturnal, so you need a night tour to see them at either location.

On Kapiti Island, you must book an overnight stay at the Kapiti Nature Lodge to spot kiwi pukupuku in the wild. Standard daytime tours run for roughly 5.5 hours during daylight, making kiwi sightings highly unlikely before you return to the mainland.

What are the physical demands?

Kapiti Island requires sturdy footwear and offers varied walking tracks.

You must pass strict biosecurity checks before boarding the Kapiti ferry. Your walking boots must be thoroughly cleaned of soil and seeds. Tracks range from the easy 1-hour Rangatira Loop to the 2-hour steady climb up the Wilkinson Track to the 521-meter Tūteremoana summit.

Which should you choose?

Choose Zealandia for a quick city trip, or Kapiti Island for a full-day excursion.

If you have limited time or lack transport, an urban sanctuary makes sense. If you want a remote island experience and can dedicate a full day, book a Kapiti Island tour package. Driving to the departure point at Paraparaumu Beach takes 50 minutes from Wellington CBD.
