You cannot simply show up and take a boat to Kapiti Island. Access to the sanctuary is tightly controlled to protect the fragile ecosystem. Booking an authorized tour is the only way to secure your landing permit and ferry passage.

Do you need a permit to visit Kapiti Island?

Yes, a Department of Conservation (DOC) permit is mandatory for all visitors landing on the island.

You do not need to buy the permit separately. Authorized ferry operators bundle the DOC permit directly with your ferry ticket. This two-step requirement is handled entirely when you book a standard day or overnight tour.

How much do Kapiti Island ferry tickets cost?

Day tours that include your ferry ticket, DOC permit, and an introductory talk start from $169 NZD per adult.

Children's tickets start from $99 NZD. Prices change depending on the booking platform and your chosen inclusions. A fully guided tour featuring a cooked lunch at the lodge costs approximately $325 NZD.

Why is visitor access restricted?

The island is a completely predator-free sanctuary, and daily visitor numbers are strictly capped.

Usually, only 160 people are allowed on the island each day. This minimizes environmental impact and protects endangered native wildlife like takahē and kōkako. Because spots are limited, you should book your tickets well in advance.

Where do you catch the ferry?

Authorized ferry operators depart from Paraparaumu Beach on the Kapiti Coast.

You will check in at the Kapiti Boating Club on Marine Parade. Driving north from Wellington on State Highway 1 takes about 50 minutes. Free parking is generally available near the departure point.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Ferry crossings are strictly subject to sea and weather conditions.

If the sea is too rough, operators will cancel the sailing for safety. The best time to visit is during Spring and Summer (October to April). During these months, you will experience warmer weather and calmer sea conditions.

How do you get to the ferry without a car?

You can book a tour package that includes shuttle transport from Wellington.

Some operators offer pickup directly from your Wellington accommodation or the Central Train Station. This shuttle ride takes about 1.5 hours. Shuttle inclusions add to your tour price, with Wellington return packages costing around $545 NZD.
